The MAL\17 shallow water mine is used as a defense against amphibious assaults. The 18 kg warhead will do significant damage to most types of landing craft. The three pressure sensors and mooring chain combine to create a formidable shallow water threat. The mines are normally emplaced just below the low tide water level. These mines can be difficult to detect visibly, depending on the water clarity. A copy of this mine is produce in Egypt as the MAL-17.
